Personalized Pre-Operative Joint Replacement Care

At Whole Health, we operate under the orthopedic philosophy that a well-educated patient can assist in optimizing the results of their total or partial joint replacement. We care for our patients not only physically, but mentally and emotionally as well, truly assessing their health as a whole entity. In addition to the kinematic joint replacements we provide our patients, we also believe in the benefits of equipping them with thorough knowledge of the potential risks or complications associated with either operation. Our patients will leave their consultation knowing what their individual road to recovery will look like and how they can utilize realistic expectations to optimize their wellness and post-operative results. Beyond that, we introduce each of our patients to a personal patient concierge, or someone they can be in constant contact with throughout the process to confidently express any questions or concerns they may be experiencing. Kinematic Alignment Joint Replacement | Total Knee Replacement

Kinematic alignment joint replacement, also known as total knee arthroplasty (TKA), is a method of knee replacement that aims to restore the natural anatomy of a patient’s knee and limb. To do this, rather than adjusting the knee of the patient, Dr. Molli and his team at the Whole Health Orthopedic Institute perform measured bone resections and minimize the release of certain ligaments – namely, the posterior cruciate, collateral, and retinacular ligaments. Whole Health has performed over 700 TKA procedures performed since December 11th of 2018, and fortunately for our patients, none of them required a primary care referral.

In our experience at Whole Health, we have noted less post-operative swelling and edema following the kinematic alignment joint replacement procedure, as well as improved motion as early as three weeks post-op. Generally, TKAs lead to more stable and natural feeling knees than traditional knee replacement procedures. With TKAs, most patients experience little to no post-operative balancing issues. At Whole Health, we believe in educating our patients thoroughly about our procedures. We’ve seen knowledge lead to positive lifestyle alterations and changes in behavior that can optimize the results of each operation we perform.

Partial Knee Replacements | The Moto Partial Knee System

One of Whole Health’s proudest achievements is our own Dr. Molli being one of the four creators of the medial unicompartmental replacement known as the “Moto Partial Knee System”. This anatomic and compartment-specific piece is capable of fitting 10 different femur sizes and 8 different tibia sizes with 6 poly thickness options to boot. Our dedication to superior orthopedic care goes beyond simply performing the surgeries, rather making sure that each component is a perfect fit for our patients.

During this procedure, our surgeons only replace one component of the patient’s knee, allowing their recovered limb to feel more “natural” and similar to their pre-operative knee than a total knee arthroplasty would leave them. As a less invasive procedure, partial knee replacements naturally run into fewer complications than TKAs, including less stiffness and less risk of infection and blood clots. This operation offers quicker functional recovery than a total knee replacement, partially due to the fact that a partial knee replacement allows us to preserve all four ligaments within the knee. Should you require a total knee arthroplasty down the road, our partial knee replacements can be easily converted by our expert team of physicians, surgeons, and post-operative professionals.

Potential Risks & Complications for Kinematic Alignment Joint Replacement Surgeries

Being prepared for hip, knee, or shoulder replacement requires physical, mental, and emotional readiness. Although pain after surgery is an anticipated reality, it’s important to keep in mind that this is surgical pain/soreness; it is temporary and should resolve with time. Patients may also experience:

  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Nausea / Vomiting
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Bruising
  • Frustration
  • Fatigue
  • Lightheadedness / Dizziness

Today, physicians and other clinicians have gotten very good at anticipating this pain and treating it before it even occurs. Whole Health utilizes a state-of-the-art pain protocol to keep patients feeling better than before.

With all joint replacements, it is necessary to understand the potential risks as they are part of the informed consent process. Some of these complications may include:

  • Infection
  • Blood clot
  • Numbness
  • Damage to muscles, tendons, ligaments & nerves
  • Clicking / popping
  • Failure of procedure
  • Need for revision surgery
  • Implant wear/failure
  • Reactions to medications or anesthesia
  • Death

Whole Health Orthopedic Institute is here to keep you from becoming overwhelmed by these risks. Feel free to contact us today with any additional questions you may have.
