Dr. John Balk is a board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon with specialized training in spine surgery. He is highly skilled in diagnosing and treating a wide range of musculoskeletal conditions, including disorders of the spine as well as conditions affecting the shoulder, hip, and knee. Dr. Balk emphasizes patient-centered care and typically recommends surgical intervention only after appropriate non-operative treatment options have been fully explored.
Prior to joining Whole Health Orthopedic Institute in June 2026, Dr. Balk practiced in both hospital-based and private practice settings, including Bon Secours Mercy Health in Lorain, Ohio, and St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio. He brings a broad scope of experience in spine care, general orthopedics, joint conditions, and fracture management, allowing him to provide comprehensive care to patients throughout the region.
Dr. Balk completed his orthopedic surgery residency through University Hospitals Cleveland. He then pursued advanced fellowship training in spine surgery at Texas Back Institute in Plano, Texas, and St. Vincent Charity Medical Center in Cleveland, Ohio, where he developed expertise in both surgical and non-surgical spine care.
