At Whole Health Joint Replacement Institute, our procedures are performed by the best joint replacement surgeons in the region; we implement our founding philosophies with every surgery that we perform. We believe in an all-encompassing approach to health that includes ensuring patients are not only physically well, but mentally and emotionally well enough to undergo a major operation. We also believe that nothing is more important in preparing for a joint replacement than a well-educated patient. That is why we spend so much time and effort educating each patient before surgery.
Not only do we have the most talented hip and knee replacement surgeons in the region but they are also the most experienced, with over 50 years of combined surgical experience. Our surgeons have performed over 18,000 hip and knee replacements and counting. In addition, Dr. Molli is one of the four designing surgeons of the Medacta MOTO Partial Knee Replacement System. Whole Health has performed more MOTO partial knee replacement surgeries than any other practice on the planet.
About the MOTO Partial Knee System
Whole Health’s own Dr. Ryan Molli is one of the four creators of Medacta’s newest partial knee replacement system known as the Moto Partial Knee System. The Moto Partial Knee System was globally released in March of 2018 at the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) Annual Meeting in New Orleans. The replacement was designed to optimize the most precise and custom anatomical fit for compartment-specific coverage for the broadest range of patient anatomies possible. It features a patient-specific gap balance and alignment technique with minimized and precise bone resections, without ligament releases. The implant design and instrumentation work together so that intraoperative decision-making and flexibility are optimized for each patient.
The implants have the widest range of sizes of all companies with 10 different femur sizes and eight different tibia sizes, with six poly (plastic) thickness options also available. The MOTO Partial Knee system improves upon previous implant designs, instrument designs, and flexibility of the system, taking the potential of partial knee arthroplasty to new heights. For us, this also means harnessing the potential to decrease the incidence of loosening and progression of disease – two of the most common reasons for revision of unicompartmental knee replacements. Whole Health’s dedication to superior orthopedic care goes beyond performing the surgeries; rather, we make sure that each component is a perfect fit for our patients. In addition, Dr. Molli has traveled the globe and has hosted visiting surgeons from around the world teaching this technique to surgeons from multiple countries including Canada, Switzerland, France, Italy, Belgium, Japan, Australia, South Africa, and multiple other US surgeons.
Benefits of Partial Knee Replacements
During a partial knee replacement surgery, our surgeons only replace one compartment of the patient’s knee, allowing their recovered limb to feel more “natural” and similar to their pre-operative knee than it would following total knee arthroplasty (TKA). In addition, partial knee replacements naturally run into fewer complications than TKAs, including less stiffness and less risk of infection or blood clots. This operation also offers quicker functional recovery than a total knee replacement, due in part to the fact that a partial knee replacement will allow us to preserve all four ligaments within the knee.
Ultimately, according to a study by the National Institute for Health Research, replacing just one side of the knee is likely to result in fewer short-term complications and better knee function than a total knee if that patient is a good partial knee candidate. If you do happen to require a TKA procedure at some point, Whole Health’s partial knee replacements can easily be converted to a total knee by our expert surgeons.
